ICAHD UK, in partnership with the West London Palestine Solidarity Campaign, is proud to host Mazin Qumsiyeh, Director of the Palestine Museum of Natural History, as part of his UK tour, at the Irish Cultural Centre, 5 Black's Road, Hammersmith, London W6 9DT on Tuesday 23 July at 7.30pm.

Mazin will be speaking on 'Popular Resistance in Palestine: A History of Hope and Entitlement', the title being taken from his 2011 book, drawing from his extensive personal experience of non-violent direct action.

Mazin was born in Beit Sahour, a suburb of Bethlehem in 1957, an area that has been occupied by Israel since 1967 and received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Jordan University in 1978. This was followed by a Masters in Zoology from the University of Connecticut in 1982 and a PhD from Texas Tech University (1986). Despite the difficulties of living under occupation, Mazin has authored over 110 scientific papers in areas of mammalogy, biology, and medicine including mammalian biology and evolution, clinical genetics, and cancer research.

Mazin has written four important books covering both his scientific work and his experiences as an activist: 'Bats of Egypt' (1985), 'Mammals of the Holy Land' (1996), 'Sharing the Land of Canaan' (2004) and 'Popular Resistance in Palestine: A History of Hope and Empowerment' (2011).

Among his activism roles have been as co-founder of the AcademicsFor Justice.org and BoycottIsraeliGoods.org campaigns and as co-founder, national treasurer and media coordinator of Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition (http://al-awda.org). He is also a member of other human rights groups including Amnesty, Peace action, Human Rights Watch and ACLU.

Mazin was awarded the Jallow activism award from the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee in 1998.
