What is ICAHD?

ICAHD is a non-violent, direct-action group dedicated to ending the Israeli Occupation and achieving a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Over the past two decades we have focused our activism on Israel’s policy of demolishing Palestinian homes (close to 50,000 in the OPT since 1967), both as a key issue in the Occupation but also as a vehicle for showing how the Occupation works, highlighting its pro-active character and thus the need to hold Israel accountable, and exposing the human cost of occupation.

ICAHD is located in Jerusalem but there are groups supporting ICAHD’s vision in the UK, the US, Germany, Finland and Australia working in order to insert a critical Israeli voice into the public debate abroad and mobilize support for a just peace. All of our work in the Occupied Territories is closely coordinated with local Palestinian organizations.

Since its founding, ICAHD’s activities have extended to four interrelated spheres:

  • Resisting the demolition of Palestinian homes. ICAHD members physically block bulldozers sent to demolish homes. We also mobilize Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild them as acts of political resistance, having built almost 200 homes in the past 20 years. This has proven an effective vehicle of grassroots peace-making. ICAHD activists also participate in resistance activities initiated by other organizations.
  • Strategizing over a just political settlement and how to achieve it. ICAHD’s activism has always been closely tied to the need to end the Occupation and realize a just peace, not merely protesting, documenting or analyzing. We are engaged in a number of initiatives with our Palestinian and Israeli partners to articulate a workable plan for the future, particularly exploring ways to transform the single apartheid regime Israel has imposed over the entire country into a single democratic state for all the country’s inhabitants, including the Palestinian refugees.
  • Disseminating information and networking. As Israelis familiar with both Israeli policies and the realities “on the ground,” we are uniquely placed to give critical insight into the conflict. Our members meet frequently with diplomats, journalists, international activists, fact-finding missions and the interested public, offering both briefings and tours of the OPT and Israel from a critical perspective. ICAHD also produces informational material — books, focused pamphlets and position papers, maps, films, slide presentations and a web presence — which we disseminate in person, at conferences, on our frequent ICAHD speaking tours abroad, on social media and in the press. We work closely with other activists and human rights organizations in Israel, in Palestine and abroad. Our chapters abroad multiply our contributions and amplify our voice.
  • Providing oral and written reports to the UN based on gaining ECOSOC status and the invitation to engage with UN activities. ICAHD also cooperates with other human rights organizations to present legal challenges to Israeli actions and policies in the Occupied Palestine Territory.

The Goal: A Just and Sustainable Peace

As Israelis, we believe that the only chance for a political settlement that can work is to advocate for full equality of Palestinians and Israelis in Palestine/Israel, with their collective and individual rights constitutionally guaranteed. Indeed, a workable peace must also address the needs of all the peoples of our conflict-ridden region for security, dignity, freedom and economic opportunity.
